International audience ; In recent decades, the Amazon has become one of the most important issues on the global environmental and political agenda. This is a region that has undergone enormous transformations since the late 1970s. Among the main factors behind these changes are the deforestation of large areas of forest, the emergence of important migratory flows and the implementation of large mining and energy projects.This book intends to evoke, through the discourse of the press of five European countries, over the years 1977-1997, the Amazon region as a bearer of multiple social and cultural meanings. If at first this region is represented in the register of the distant fantastic, after twenty years it becomes a very concrete political and socio-environmental symbol. How did journalists see the transforming economic projects in this region? What were the sources of information most used by the press? How was the discourse of NGOs, then very active in the field, portrayed? These are some of the issues addressed in this book, which intends to make a contribution to studies on this region and to the role of the press and public opinion as constitutive elements of the contemporary political scenario.The moment when this book is released is certainly different, but the material and the analyzes generated point to tensions and conflicts between different social actors that are rekindled today. Today we live in a historic moment of emergence of right-wing extremism and a crisis of values, whose tangible consequences for the Amazon are the resurgence of fires, the strengthening of deforestation vectors linked to a globalized economy and violence of all kinds against the forest peoples. Abstract This article aims to reflect on the strategic importance of hydroelectric energy generated in the Amazon region for the interconnected Brazilian system. Its quantification shows a regional potential for higher energy generation compared to the current production of pre-salt oil. We consider this issue from the perspective of the geopolitics of renewable energy that brings new and relevant elements. In this article, the analytical framework focuses on path-dependence, smart-grids and energy-intensive societies and their energy security policies. As a result, we observe that in the current configuration, the advent of renewable energies can be an additional element of a long-term economic specialization of the Amazon, with worrying consequences from a socio-environmental perspective.

This paper seeks to interpret political and institutional crisis from a perspective that prefers to interpret its internal dynamics, as a method to explicit the whole social process. It suggests that to interpret political crisis, it is necessary to make longer observation of the moves and actions of the main players and institutions in operation, in a context of social complexity. Thus, this paper aims to explicit the inability to focus on the outcomes of a political crisis, without taking into account its internal processes, which vary according to the diffuse and specific political capital possessed by social and institutional players. Thereby, political crisis are moments of fluidity of the prior political equilibrium, which can be amended on new bases, with a new legitimacy brought by individual and institutional performance in specific social space and historical time.
